The Unveiling of the Creatures of Comfort New York Store Flag

with Collection of Works by

Brian Roettinger and Zen Sekizawa

This coming Flag Day, historically held on June 14^th, Creatures of Comfort New York is excited to present the unveiling of the Creatures of Comfort Flag, designed by Los Angeles based artist Brian Roettinger.

Jade Lai commissioned Roettinger to design the store’s signifier, which has been constructed in a non-traditional form to challenge the way one often thinks of a “flag” in the wind. In conjunction with the unveiling, Creatures of Comfort will present “Half Conceal, Half Disclose,” a collection of work by Roettinger and photographer Zen Sekizawa. Taking place in Creatures of Comfort’s adjunct gallery, “Half Conceal, Half Disclose” is inspired by the wind and its effect on shape and environment. Roettinger and Sekizawa’s collection of work explores how the wind, as an invisible force, has culturally been perceived as embodying an unearthly presence. There will be a limited edition collaborative tote designed by Creatures of Comfort owner Jade Lai and the featured artists, as well as a limited edition booklet by the artists.

On Saturday, May 7th, I helped Clare Vivier and Kathryn Bentley celebrate the much-anticipated launch of their new retail and atelier space in Silverlake.

As the shop opened to friends and family, the Kathryn Bentley and Clare Vivier pieces in the store front came to life on the arms (and wrists, necks, and ears) of LA’s gems of ladies; including Heather Taylor (Taylor de Cordoba), Jeana Sohn (Closet Visit), Melissa Coker, Simone LeBlanc, and Jessica Trent. The evening was also attended by local designers Annie Costello-Brown, Lizz Wasserman (Popomomo), and Michelle Lane, Family’s David Kramer, Ooga Booga’s Wendy Yao, Commune’s Roman Alonso, and LA Times’ Max Padilla.

The crowd was a rare and wonderful mix of generations, from three-year olds to grandpas. Lots of moms (and some grandmas) came through and enjoyed some pre-mother’s day champagne by Veuve Clicquot. Way to bring it, LA.

Creatures of Comfort Spring/Summer 2011

Jade Lai developed her first Creatures of Comfort collection in 2008 with the modern woman in mind. Lai’s objective was simple: to create beautiful, comfortable clothing with a lasting look and quality. The Creatures of Comfort collection is meant to be a platform for building-upon, with styles carrying on from season to season.

The Spring 2011 collection is defined by color-blockings of washed-out violets, mints, salmon and cement grey with pops of cantaloupe, Prussian blue, and Kelly green. They are a gentle nod to Lai’s love for modernist expression. A lime-green silky pocketed top matched with an ethereal cement gray short personifies the sophisticated composition of an Agnes Martin painting. While a floor-length textured silk skirt and sheer burnt orange silk blouse conjure the artful elegance of Meryl Streep in “Out of Africa.”

Elements of loungewear bring an epicurean tone to the collection: pocket-less washed silk shorts and trousers paired with simple silk waffle blouses and tanks. This look is balanced with demure, ankle brazing tiered linen skirts and dresses and boxy, swing jackets. Lai’s designs are never overtly any one thing, as they are meant to be effortlessly mixed and matched with each other. A silk body hugging, ankle-length deep-sea blue dress with a plunging drop back is paired with Spring’s Miyake-esque oversized black silk trench, and LD Tuttle heels to create a signature look of the season. Simple linen-jersey tops and chambray button-ups show up again as essential stand-bys in the collection.
